The construction schedule is the single most important coordination document on any project. It tells every trade when to show up, what to build, and how their work connects to everyone else's. So why does only one person have access to the actual file?
On most projects, the schedule lives in Primavera P6 on a single machine in the field trailer. The scheduler updates it, prints it, and distributes a PDF at the monthly OAC meeting. By the time the team sees it, the information is already stale.
This is not a technology problem. P6 is powerful software. The problem is access. At $3,000+ per license per year, most companies can only justify one or two seats. And even if you could afford more, the learning curve means only trained specialists can use it.
The result: the most important document on the project is effectively invisible to the people who need it most. Superintendents, project managers, trade partners, and owners all make daily decisions that affect the schedule, but they are working from memory, instinct, and a printout that is weeks old.
There is a better way. Modern scheduling tools should be accessible to everyone on the project team, not just the one person with the P6 license. The schedule should be a living document that updates in real time, not a static PDF that gets printed once a month.
That is why we built Cairn.
